Community Assessment Report released
The CTC Community Board has released the Community Assessment report that outlines the results of the youth survey completed in the spring of 2009, along with a summary of other data that provides a picture of the well-being of youth in Williams Lake.
Communities That Care is an exciting new community based approach to preventing problem youth behaviour. It focuses on promoting positive and healthy youth behaviour, while understanding the roots causes of negative behaviour. We’re using research to understand what’s really going on in our community, and how to prevent it from happening in the future.
Positive Youth Development
We know that if we want children and youth to have healthy behaviours, we need to have clear standards for them so they know and understand what healthy behaviours are and what is expected of them. This needs to happen in families, schools, among their peers, and in the community. Youth need to feel like they belong (attachment and bonding) and have a sense of commitment to their family, school and community. So how do we value our children and youth, and encourage them toward positive behaviours? By giving them the skills and opportunities to behave positively and develop healthy bonds, and by giving them recognition when they do.
Risk Factors
Risk Factors are things that make children and youth more vulnerable to getting involved in negative behaviour. We need to understand what they are, and how much they are affecting kids in our community, schools, and families. Once we understand which factors have the biggest effect in our community, we'll be able to use the resources we have to focus on reducing those risks.
